Globelink Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is one of those extras which nobody really wants to pay for, but everybody needs to take.

Here's why....

My first flight on holiday was in 1991. New York.

And guess what....I didn't have insurance. Now of all the places in all the world, the US is one place where you SHOULD have it. Thankfully I didn't need it, but only by chance, and since then I've always taken it.

In those 33 years I've only claimed on it 3 times, so you might say that's it costly and unnecessary, maybe, but let me tell you why it's not.

I mainly recommend it for health reasons.

In 2022, the cost (through the AXA Select network) for a one-night stay in a European hospital was around $157/£125 or €146 in Belgium or France and around $315/£250/€293 in Luxembourg. In Nigeria, it was as high as $372/£300 or €346. It’s easy to see how bills could add up if you needed to spend a few nights, or even weeks, in hospital.

A night in a hospital bed is all about recovery. The last thing you need is to worry about how much it might all be costing.

As with all healthcare services, the cost of an evacuation differs wildly depending on where you are. For example, one of the shorter evacuations that AXA organised for a customer in 2022 was from Jersey to mainland UK, which cost $14,498/£11,608 or €13,485.1 In the same year, a long-haul evacuation from China to Belgium cost $28,667/£22,954 or €26,664. While this is almost twice the price, the journey takes more than 10 times as long and is nearly 30 times as far.

I'm not even going to comment about what happens when someone unfortunately dies abroad.

For these two reasons alone I believe that it's worth taking out insurance.

The other consideration is for your valuables. Whilst most of us don't bother about the loss of theft of our sunglasses, when it comes to our passports, cash and credit cards, thats a different matter.

The cost, in both time and money of replacing a lost or stolen passport whilst on holiday is great....and not in a good way.

Then comes delayed travel and curtailment. We may all have experienced a couple of hours flight delay, but when it gets to seven or eight and connecting flights, cruises and other connections are effected insurance helps get us to where we need to be, or back home without being out of pocket.

Just imagine your flight being delayed before your cruise. The airline only files twice a week, and you cannot make it to the port in time. Not only will insurance pay to get you to the ship, they'll do all the booking and organising for you. That really is a great help.
